When the UAE qualified for the FIFA World Cup (Italy 1990), Sharjah was responsible for supplying the national team with no less than nine players. Nicknamed "The King" for a record winning eight victories in the President's Cup, Sharjah has earned its place as one of the regions 'greats'.
Established in 1966 under the name of Al-Orouba Club and merging in 1974 with Al-Khaleej, it became the main sports club in the emirate of Sharjah, and was officially registered as " Sharjah Sports and Culture Club" in 1978. It went on to become a cornerstone of UAE footballing history as the first winner of the official UAE Football League in the 1973-1974, and winners of four more titles in the late 80's and early 90's in what was a period of great prosperity for UAE football.
