The foundation of Al Wahda Club goes back to before the establishment of the United Arab Emirates. In 1966 and at the current club headquarter in Abu Dhabi, the first nucleus was established under the name of Al Ahli Club in addition to the existence of three other clubs at that time, and they were: Al Ittihad, Al Falah, and Al Wahda, which were competing with the rest of the clubs in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi in the competitions that were organized at the time.

In 1974, the two clubs of Al Ahli and Al Falah were merged under the name of the Emirates Club at the current club headquarter. Also, the Ittihad Club and Al Wahda Club were merged under the name of Abu Dhabi Club, and its headquarter was based at the present Military Physical Training Compound.

Each of the Emirates and Abu Dhabi clubs participated in the competitions organized by the UAE Football Association, and they often met in the first division competitions and the President’s Cup Competition..

In 1984, and based on the directives of His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces and Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Chairman of the Executive Council of the Emirate of Abu Dhabi at that time, and the recommendations of the committee which was formed by: His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Zayed Al Nahyan, His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Mubarak Al Nahyan, and the Secretary General of the Supreme Council for Youth and Sports Mr. Ahmed Bo Hussein, the two clubs of Emirates and Abu Dhabi were merged under the name of Al Wahda Sports and Cultural Club, and its headquarter was based at the same previous headquarter of the Emirates Club, and it is the current headquarter of Al Wahda Club in the middle of the capital city of Abu Dhabi on Hazza bin Zayed Street (formerly called Defense Road).

His Highness Sheikh Tahnoun bin Saeed Al Nahyan chaired the first meeting of the club’s board of directors, which included in its membership 21 members from the two club’s boards of directors (Emirates and Abu Dhabi) before the merger. His Highness Sheikh Saeed bin Zayed Al Nahyan presided over the club in 1990, and this was the start of the actual launch of Al Wahda Football Club team which became an important figure in the Emirates football. The team was moving from one success to another at the local, Gulf, Arab, and Asian levels, and even at the international level when it participated in the Club World Cup Championship in Abu Dhabi in 2010, and it finished in the sixth position.
