The Boys of Summer

It is amazing what a difference a few weeks makes in football. We were all set to see Cosmin Olaroiu continue at the champions' helm with a much-improved contract.  His brief simple: lead Al Ain in the quest for the third League title in a row, whilst playing in the most state-of-the-art stadium in the Gulf. Allegedly this was all thrown into doubt when Coach Cosmin returned from holiday to see one or two contract clauses he didn't like. Al Ahli  have jumped in with an offer of a longer contract and, depending on who you believe, more freedom to manage. I'm sure there will be one or two more twists and turns before this is played out.

The transfer silly season is underway with players being linked with the UAE left right and centre. The lure of the UAE in footballing and lifestyle terms is undisputed but can lead to some strange claims. Here are my big or not-so-big ones so far...

Roque Santa Cruz - A former Manchester City and Blackburn injury-prone striker who impressed in spells during his English Premier League career. There is talk of the 31-year-old being Al Nasr-bound, but it seems Serie A is his destination for now. I can see him appearing here in a couple of years if not quite yet.

Mauro Formica - the Argentinian played for Blackburn in their relegation year and it took its toll because he failed a Bani Yas medical. He won't be here in the UAE unless medical science can catch up quickly.

Shola Ameobi - the Newcastle striker appears to have dallied with Al Nasr, Al Wasl and Al Wahda but so far all three have shown a fleeting interest in the player with none willing the make the move.

Ronaldinho - the biggest name to be linked with a move to these parts so far, the Brazilian World Cup winner has shown a resurgence in form and is currently in the midst of a Copa Liberdatores semi-final with his club Athletico Mineiro.  I think more will become clear once he has played this game and if he progresses to the final. If his team bow out then things could move swiftly for the Brazilian. I am not sure if it with be in the direction of Al Shabab but if he did make the move it would be arguably the biggest signing in UAE history.

Finally we should congratulate the 12 teams that were licensed for the forthcoming Arabian Gulf League. The progress over the years since professionalism has often gone unnoticed. We look at improvements on the English side such as a website, English TV commentary, pitch side LED boards, clubs merchandising, Pro League Awards and many more behind the scenes that don't get a mention. The fact that twelve out of fourteen clubs got licensed at the first time of asking shows the progress of the League as a whole.
