2010-2011 Season Awards

The curtain is down on another season and as the main characters of the Etisalat Pro-League take their final bow let's hand out some awards.

Let's start with "Player of Season Award"

Francisco Yeste of Al Wasl. A deadly left foot from a dead ball situation and he pulls the strings in midfield. Time will tell if the Spanish player remains in Dubai for a second season.

"Goalkeeper of the Season Award"

This one goes to a second division player - RAK Goalkeeper Ahmed Alzaabi for his performances in the AFC Champions League. He is athletic and agile and I am sure he will shine in the Etisalat Pro-League next season.

"Team of the Season Award"

I am not going with the obvious and picking Champions Al Jazira, but rather my vote goes to the little team from Al Awir, Dubai Club. The team looked dead and buried after losing their first seven games but somehow dug their way out of certain relegation.

"Goal of the Season Award"

Francisco Yeste again! His shot from the halfway line against Al Ain whilst they were busy celebrating a goal was incredible. It was a big hit with football fans on YouTube but not one the Al Ain keeper will be watching again.

"I Wish We Never Let Him Go Award"

Al Ain who sold Andre Senghor to Bani Yas. Al Ain struggled against relegation whilst Senghor finished as the League's top scorer.

"Must be Better Prepared Award"

Goes to the fan at Al Jazira's home match who had the chance to win a million dirhams for a shot at goal and decided flip flops were suitable footwear for the occasion.

"Fan of the Year Award"

Goes to the Al Ain fan who led the chanting at their first game of the season against Al Ahli. He collapsed midway through the second half due to heat exhaustion.

"Leave Everyone Open Mouthed in Disbelief Award"

Al Wasl when they announced Maradona as their new coach.

That's it for another season. We say congratulations to Al Jazira on their first Championship and goodbye to Al Dhafra and Kalba. We will welcome Ajman and Emirates Clubs back to the top division for 2011/12. It all starts again in September - just a few months away.

One final comment... I am writing this from the press box at Al Wasl and as I look to my right I can see Maradona flanked by security guards. The diminutive Argentinian gives me the feeling that next season will be unforgettable in more ways than one.
