UAE League Cup: Round Two Preview

The 2013/14 UAE League Cup got off to an exciting start on Tuesday and Wednesday, and it’s good news for fans as they don’t have long to wait until the next round of action is served up. Round Two takes place on Sunday 8th and Monday 9th September, with only Bani Yas and Al Nasr given respite according to the draw.

Sunday’s early kick-off will see Al Shaab travel to Dubai at 5:45pm, with both teams entering the game off the back of a 1-0 defeat in the opening round. Al Shaab were punished at their home ground by Al Jazira, whilst Dubai suffered at the hands of Al Wahda, and both teams will be looking to register their first points in Group A.

At 8:30pm on Sunday Al Jazira will host newly-promoted Sharjah, who were out of action in the opening round. Al Jazira currently sit second in Group A and will hope to build on their opening tally of 3 points in the competition. Also kicking off at 8:30pm, Ajman will welcome Al Shabab to the Rashid bin Saeed Stadium as they continue their title defence. Abdulwahab Abdulkader’s men got off to a winning start as they came from behind to beat Al Nasr 2-1 in Group B, whilst Al Shabab suffered a 1-0 defeat at home to Dubai neighbours Al Wasl.

On Monday at 5:45pm, Al Ahli will face promoted Emirates at the changed venue of Al Nasr’s Al Maktoum Stadium, due to renovation works at the Rashid Stadium in preparation for hosting the FIFA U17 World Cup in October. Emirates sat out the first round of the UAE League Cup, whilst Al Ahli suffered a shock 3-1 defeat on the road at Al Dhafra and will be looking to put things right in Group B.

At 8:30pm on Monday, Al Dhafra will make the long journey to Al Wasl’s Zabeel Stadium in Dubai with both teams having 3 points on the board in Group B after Round One. At the same time, Al Wahda visit Al Ain at the Tahnon bin Mohammed Stadium with the reigning League champions – currently bottom of Group A – desperate to improve on their 3-1 opening round defeat at Bani Yas.
