Strong Start for Bani Yas

Last year's Etisalat Pro-League surprise packages Bani Yas had a good start to their campaign this year as they edged Al Shabab 1-0 at Maktoum Stadium in Dubai on Saturday.

Bani Yas owe their win for their Sengalese forward Andre Senghor who scored the only goal on the night one minute after the hour mark.

Bani Yas, who finished fourth in the league last season, were the better side on the night and they managed to create several chances thanks to the good movements of Dhiab Awana and Oman international midfielder Fawzi Bashir.

However, the best chance in the first half fell for Al Shabab Lamine Diarra who nearly opened the scoring from close range but his shot went next to the left upright (37).

Al-Shabab had another chance in the second half when their Brazilian forward Julio Cesar had a powerful shot but Bani Yas goalkeeper Ayoub Omar pushed the ball away to a corner (58).

But it was Bani Yas who scored the only goal on the night three minutes later when Amer Abdulrahman sent a cross which was headed home by Senghor into Al Shabab net to open the scoring in the game.

Al Shabab went into the attack in the remaining minutes of the second half, but Bani Yas held on to their lead with a good defensive display to finish the game with a 1-0 win.
