Al Wahda force Sharjah to stay at the bottom of the table with a 2-1 win
Al Wahda beat Sharjah 2-1 in their Etisalat Pro League 18 round match of the current season played this evening at Sharjah Stadium, a result that forced the losers to stay at the bottom of the table with 10 points while the winners jumped one step forward taking 7th position with 24 points.
The two teams started the game with different ambitions as Sharjah, who are sitting in the last position with 10 points from 17 matches, were seeking to win the three points to give them hope to flee the bottom of the table, while Al Wahda were endeavoring to snatch full points that would keep them in the middle of the ladder. The visitors played without a number of their key players including Ismail Mattar, Mahmoud Khamis and Brazilian Hugo.
The two teams tried their continuous attempts to score an early goal, for Sharjah being the better side after making some attacks but both squads failed to create real chances. The first opportunity was in the 30th minute when Brazilian Edinho launched a strong volley off a stand ball but goalkeeper Motaz Abdullah saved brilliantly. This was followed by another chance via Sharjah’s Korean player Li Sung Hu who sent a strong left footer for Motaz to divert it to a corner three minutes before the end of the first session which ended with a goalless draw.
Yousuf Saeed squandered an invaluable chance for Sharjah five minutes after the break when he received a long pass from Abdul Aziz Sanqoor but he shot wide from a very close distance. Brazilian Bayano replied with a header four minutes later but the ball missed the target. Sharjah’s coach Abul Majeed Al Nimir brought in Saeed Al Kas to replace Yousuf Saeed in the 61st minute and Al Wahda’s coach fielded in Saeed Al Katheri to substitute Salim Saleh five minutes later.
Both teams continued their attacks but Al Wahda were the first to make their dreams come true when Bayano’s shot rebounded off the goalkeeper’s hands for Amer Omer to drive it home giving the visitors a 1-0 lead in the 73rd minute and Saeed Al Katheri put the match beyond the reach of Sharjah team when he made it 2-0 with a strong left volley. Brazilian Marcelinho scored the consolation goal for Sharjah in the 90th minute to end the game with a 2-1 for Al Wahda.
