Al Dhafra qualify for Gulf Clubs Championship quarterfinals
Al Dhafra have qualified for the quarterfinals of the Gulf Clubs Championship after humiliating Al Arabi of Qatar 5-0 in the match played at Hamdan Bin Zayed Stadium in the Western Region last night. They avenged their previous loss in Doha to raise their balance to 6 points and move to the top of Group B on goal difference to second placed Al Arabi. If they finish the group stage as leaders, they will play their quarterfinals game at home.
Al Dhafra played one of their best games in the recent weeks under the guidance of their new Syrian coach Mohammad Kwid. They ended the first session with Boris Kabi's lone goal, which he scored three minutes before the break. Al Dhafra could have finished the first half with more than three goals if Kabi and his colleague Abbas Moya did not squander a handful of chances. The hosts put more pressure on their rival's defense from the start and launched a number of attacks, but the visiting team's defenders kept them from scoring. The visitors were missing nine of their key players, which had a large affect on their performance and their subsequent loss.
Boris Kabi added his second goal only 6 minutes into the second session off a corner. The ball rebounded off the goalkeeper's hands for Kabi to drive it into the roof of the net to make it 2-0.The visiting team created a few chances but they were weak and lacked concentration. Al Dhafra continued their strong and their hard work soon led them to net the third goal in the 70th minute via Abdullah Al Kindi who sent a long-range volley that went straight into the net. Then Al Arabi's Ezat Jidoo committed a blunder, scoring the 4th into his own net five minutes later. Mohammad Salim concluded the rout scoring the 5th goal from a long distance shot, making it 5-0 three minutes before the final whistle.
