Cosmin: The Super Cup is always special

Al Ahli head coach Cosmin Olaroiu says the Arabian Gulf Super Cup would always be a special match, regardless of the opponent, but admits that the happenings between Al Ain and his new club in recent months add extra spice to the encounter. Speaking at the Al Ahli pre-match press conference at the Mohammed bin Zayed Stadium on Thursday morning, Cosmin said: “The Super Cup is always a special game between two strong teams. A lot of things have happened during these past few months, which will make it more interesting, and I hope it will be a good game and everyone will enjoy it.”

Stressing his commitment to playing attractive football, Cosmin is hopeful of an entertaining match. “We always wish to play good football and we will do this tomorrow. Al Ain also play very nice football, and although I don’t think either team has reached its maximum preparation level yet, I think it will be a good game and I hope the result will be decided by the teams on the field.” Cosmin was also keen to assert his ethos that each game should be approached in the same manner, regardless of the opponent, saying: “My wish is that my team plays with the same level and intensity in every match, whether it is the Arabian Gulf Super Cup final or a game against a second division team.” The Romanian coach also noted that the mentality of the players will be key in winning Friday’s clash. “These players have been playing against each other for many years now, and know each other very well, so the most important thing is the attitude and motivation of the players,” the 44-year-old said.

Joining Cosmin at the pre-match press conference was Emirati defender Basheer Saeed, who will wear the captain’s armband on Friday in the absence of the suspended Grafite. “It will be an honour to be Al Ahli captain for the Arabian Gulf Super Cup,” he told the assembled media. “We have prepared very well for the game during our pre-season training camp and we are optimistic for a positive result. I hope everyone will enjoy watching the game and that we will be happy at the end.”
