Al Wasl defeat their Qatari opponents AlKhor with three straight goals

Al Wasl overcame their Qatari counterparts AlKhor with three straight goals in the 27 GCC Clubs Championship first leg match played this evening at their home ground in Zabeel. The two teams squandered a bagful of chances in the first session especially the hosts side and both failed to score to end the first half with a goalless draw. Al Wasl demonstrated an attacking football and came close to take the lead in many occasions while the visitors depended heavily on counter attacks.

Al Wasl Iranian striker Khalatbari was almost to open the score only 22 minutes into play but his strong shot rebounded off the cross bar and cleared away by a defender. His Brazilian colleague Oliveira also found a lovely chance five minutes later but failed to score. He tried to capitalize on the severe blunder committed by the Qatari team goalkeeper who sent a short pass to one of his teammates for Oliveira  to collect the ball and tried to hook it over the advancing goalie’s head but the latter saved the day for his team when he controlled the ball brilliantly. The home team looked the better opponent after putting more pressure on their rivals’ defense giving them hard time, but the Qataris gave them no room to hit the back of the net to end the first session with a goalless draw.

Al Wasl made good efforts after the break creating a number of scoring chances and their work yielded the first goal in the 53rd minute through Oliveira who made it 2-0 in the 70th minute. The winners dominated the game afterwards for Essa Ali to conclude the rout scoring the third goal one minute into injury time to secure three invaluable points for his side. The two teams will play their return match on next Tuesday, May 29 in Doha.
