Al Jazira’s AFC Champions League campaign all but over

Abu Dhabi-based Al Jazira failed to come out with a consolation victory in their 2011 AFC Champions League Round 5 encounter on Wednesday night at Thani Bin Jasim Stadium in the Qatari capital Doha. They were badly defeated by the hosts Al Gharafa of Qatar who have kept their Champions League hopes alive with the 5-2 win. Al Gharafa are now on seven points, putting them into third position  andnot far behind the two top teams - Sepahan of Iran and Al Hilal of Saudi Arabia who are both on 10 points.

Al Jazira have not been able to achieve the same level of success they are enjoying on the domestic front, with only a single point so far from their five ACL matches. They will now host Sepahan of Iran, whilst Al Gharafa will travel to Saudi Arabia to battle it out against Al Hilal in Riyadh in the last round of the group stage on May 11. The results of these games will determine the two teams who will join the top 16 teams in the next stage, however Al Jazira are well out of contention.

After finishing the first session with a 2-1 lead, Al Jazira had a very poor second half,  committing a succession of errors that cost them the match.
