AFC Champions League, Round 2

The four UAE professional football clubs continued their AFC Champions League campaign clash on Tuesday and Wednesday March 20th & 21st in the second round of group stage and three of them (Al Jazira, Bani Yas and Al Nasr) have done very well going into the heart of the competition, while Al Shabab settled at the bottom table of Group D after their heartbreaking 1-6 defeat before their Iranian rivals Piroozi, yet the greens still have the chance to revive and take part in the Round of 16 if they worked harder as there is still 12 points left to collect.

The AFC Champions League returns in the third round on April 3rd & 4th, where Al Jaizra face Istiklal “Iran” at Azadi Stadium in Tahran on April 3rd, Bani Yas to visit Jeddah on April 4th to meet Alitihad “Saudi Arabia” at King Abdullah Al Faisal Stadium, Al Nasr and Al Shabab to host Al Ahli and Alhilal “Saudia Arabia” at Al Maktoum Stadium and Maktoum bin Rashid Stadium on April 3rd and 4th respectively.


Al Jazira lead their group table
The Abu-Dhabi based team lead the group A with 6 points collected after two consecutive remarkable wins over the Uzbek Nasaf 4-2 held in Uzbekistan and Al Rayan “Qatar” 3-2 held at Mohammad bin Zayed Stadium in Abu Dhabi. Istiklal “Iran” are second on the group table, followed by Nasaf while Al Rayan occupy the bottom of group A standings. Al Jazira are to face Istiklal on April 3rd in Tahran, it is expected to be a tough clash, Al Jazira still need another 6 points to guarantee qualification to the Round of 16.


Al Nasr back in the competition
Al Nasr found a way to return to the competition after their last minute rewarding 2-1 victory over Lekhwiya “Qatar” and to hold the second place on the group C standings with 3 points after Sepahan with 4 points, followed by Lekhwiya “while Al Ahli “Saudi Arabia” come 4th with a solitary point collected from their draw with Sepahan in the first round of the competition. The Duabi-based team will be hosting Al Hilal on April 3rd. Group C are very close in the table which makes the competition at its peak.


Bani Yas, an important match in Jeddah
Bani Yas hold the second place in the Group B table with 4 points after beating their visitors Al Arabi “Qatar” 2-0 in Al Shamikha and their 1-1 draw with the Uzbek Pakhtor. Alitihad lead Group B with 6 points, while Pakhtor and Al Arabi occupy the third and the fourth position respectively. The Abu Dhabi team will be visiting Jeddah on April 4th to meet Alitihad in a very important and highly anticipated encounter that could make the visitors at top of their group.

Al Shabab, a chance to qualify
It is true that Al Shabab are at the bottom of Group D table with a lone point but the very short distance from the top table Piroozi “Iran” who have collected 4 points so far, and the second and the third place occupiers Al Hilal “Saudi Arabia” and Al Gharafa “Qatar” who have 2 points on
